Black Fin - G. Jeffrey Ares

An inspiring old salt’s tale about a young orca whale who, upon being separated from his mother, is taken in by a humpback pod. Though very much loved by his adoptive mother, Okent knows her pod is uncomfortable with his presence, and he moves on. Forming an unlikely friendship with an albino humpback whale, Hue, the two explore the ocean and grow up together. As they learn to overcome the hardships of ocean life, they learn the biggest threat is actually above the surface, rather than beneath it.

As a budding author, the publishing world is a difficult place. You start off with

  • A fantastic book idea

  • Never-ending passion and motivation

And maybe you even write the whole book, and plan out a killer marketing campaign. But yet - you’re still not published!

Luckily, self-publishing is becoming a more accessible tool for new authors, and now it’s easier than ever to achieve your dreams of publishing your book for all the world to read. But you don’t want your great idea to go to waste because you published a book without proper editing.

In the internet age, editing your book is more important than ever before.

You have a lot to contend with, between

  • AI published material that is written more efficiently than human material

  • School curriculums that no longer teach the art of editing (forcing

you to teach it to yourself and hope for the best)

  • An oversaturated market - with all the mediums you can publish on now,

more and more people are publishing books every day! That makes for lots of competition

If you want to publish a book that is free of simple spelling and grammar mistakes, nurtures the development of a sensible yet unique plot, and meaningfully gets your idea across the way you originally intended, then you need an editor who:

  • Know the rules of spelling and grammar

  • Enjoys getting to know your book and feels

    comfortable making suggestions that will

develop your plot without taking away from

what you as an author are trying to convey

  • Operates at a lower price point so that

you have the opportunity to self-publish

without money getting in the way

You don’t have to pay thousands of dollars to publish your book!

That’s where I come in.

I’m Marisa, a freelance book editor.

When you work with me, you’re on your way to publishing a book that is meaningful, affordable, and most of all, sincerely yours.

You save time, money, and disappointment when you work with an editor whose first priority is helping you create something that you’re truly passionate about. That’s what I’m passionate about.

Why Work With Me?

When I started doing research to publish my first book, I was immediately met with the harsh reality that I couldn’t afford to do it - not without a publisher anyway. But not only is it almost impossible to get a publisher to pick your book up before you’ve sold anything, but they also take a cut of your profit. A big cut. I’m talking up to 15% of your total book sales on average.

I was devastated. And I know I’m not the only one. So I took it upon myself to provide a service that people don’t normally enjoy doing themselves, and can’t normally afford to pay outlandish prices for, even though it’s absolutely necessary

I believe everybody has a book in them. If you’ve got something to say, there’s a book waiting to be written. But I don’t believe that you should let the cost and inaccessibility be the things stopping you from spreading your word.

Wondering Why I’m Different From Other Editors?

Well, to put it simply, I get it. I get it, because I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to come so close to a dream and be forced to give it up.

That’s why I put your book first. This is passion work for me - do I expect to be financially compensated for my time? Yes. But am I looking to strip you of every dollar that you’re worth? No! That’s why I sit down with each of my clients before starting a project and we come up with a solution that works for both of us. I want you to publish your book as much as you do.

I provide proofreading, developmental editing, and enthusiasm for your book that you won’t get from a traditional book editor. But I edit just as quickly, and just as flawlessly.

I keep you in mind.

Ultimately - you get to publish a book that you’re proud of. I’m just here to make sure that it’s easy to read.

Because I know I have new authors here, let me explain the difference so that you know what you’re paying for: proofreading is simply checking for spelling and grammar errors, and potentially getting into sentence structure. Developmental editing is editing of the overall structure and plot. Developmental editing is where I look at things like plot holes, character development, and determining whether or not your book is saying what you want it to say

I offer proofreading and developmental editing as separate services, but can also do both for a bundle rate

Working with me, you’ll experience editing that is encouraging, efficient, and most importantly, editing that takes your book to the next level, while still being true to your voice.

As a freelance editor and author, you get the benefit of working with someone who is experienced on both ends of the process - so you receive editing that is backed up by both writing and editing experience.

And I never change the meaning behind your writing, or tamper with your writer’s voice; unless, of course, you specifically ask me to.

When you hire me, I don’t just correct your spelling and change a couple of words around. You get:

  • Spelling and grammar proofreading services that are appropriate for your book’s genre

  • Developmental editing that ensures an interesting plot with no plot holes

  • Encouragement from your editor that you won’t get anywhere else

Sounds fairly comprehensive right? That’s because it is! I take pride in helping people create things they’re truly proud of. I care about my clients. Like I said, I’ve been there. I know how much work and passion it takes to write a book. We don’t want to let that go to waste.

With all this in mind, my price ranges are as follows:

Services

  • General Spelling & Grammar Edits - Starting at $200/book

  • Structure, plot, character, and any other type of big-picture editing you can imagine - starting at $250/book

  • Spelling and grammar, along with big-picture editing for the full editing experience - starting at $300/book

In an effort to be fair to both myself and to you, and to give you the most personalized experience possible so you can do what’s best for your book, these rates will vary based on length and complexity. But I’ll never charge you the $1,000 minimum that “affordable indie publishers” were offering me.

You deserve to produce work you’re proud of. You deserve to have everyone in the world read it. And you deserve an editor who won’t bankrupt you to make it happen. Let’s talk about your options.
